Steve Fitch, Gone: Photographs of Abandonment on the High Plains

Steve Fitch is an assistant professor at the Marion Center for Photographic Arts at the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico. For this body of work, Fitch traveled throughout the heart of the American High Plains—from Lubbock, Texas to the Montana and North Dakota Canadian border—including a large section of central Wyoming. The artist leads us into the melancholy beauty of what’s left of the lives of so many settlers who no longer inhabit the High Plains.

From Scratch: The Fine Art of Craft

From Scratch is a group show of Wyoming craftspeople encompassing ceramics, fiber, glass, wood. The focus of the show is on function (craft) as opposed to conceptual (fine art) works, but this opposition will not hold completely across all the works by all the artists. Margaret Haydon, for instance, is making some beautiful but highly conceptual work, but nonetheless the forms she makes remain grounded in the vessel tradition. This will be true also for Jennifer Rife (basket forms), and perhaps for Do Palma (quilts) to a degree.
The project also gives the museum an opportunity to focus on the Nic’s commitment to Wyoming artists, as well as reminding the audience that in this largely rural region, a region in which agriculture is so culturally important, that many people make and repair things with their hands, that craft is a highly honored, ancient and necessary skill that deserves celebration.
