 Preschool Picassos
“Preschool Picassos,” for children ages 3-5, is our program of fun art activities and stories.
Student Docent Program
The NIC periodically offers its Student Docent Program - a unique, interdisciplinary educational program for area schools.
Here's how the program works:
-
Students come to the museum once a week after school and work with our Curator of Education, learning about our changing exhibitions of contemporary art.
-
Led by by the Curator of Education, NIC adult docents and sometimes the artists themselves, the learning sessions are focused on visual thinking exercises that the students then share with their classmates on a school field trip to the museum.
-
Students complete five training sessions at the museum after school. Within two weeks of their final training, the student docents lead their classmates and teachers through the museum on a class visit, teaching their peers what they have learned about the exhibition.
Adult Docent Program
The Adult Docent Program is designed to equip adults with the skills necessary to discover and connect with contemporary art. The FREE training sessions use an inquiry-based approach to do this. The program encourages adults to think in a new direction about contemporary art and its relationship to their own lives.
Program Goals:
- Adult docents will develop observation and visual skills throughout their training, using works of art from the NIC's current exhibitions.
- Participants will learn and model positive facilitator's behaviors (asking open-ended questions, active listening, body language, paraphrasing, and linking ideas) throughout their training experience.
- Adult Docents will experience an increased comfort level in museums and with contemporary art.
- Participants will also learn to trust their own observations, insights and ideas.
In addition, participants will be eligible for a 10% discount on a family museum membership, receive a certificate of achievement and invitations to future museum events, and have future volunteer opportunities.
